The José Valdés Math Institute is an organization whose mission is to improve students' skills in math and close the achievement gap in San Jose and Silicon Valley.

The original vision of Mr. José Valdés was to ensure that minority and underrepresented children be given equal opportunities to succeed in mathematics. This ideal provides the foundation of our philosophy at Valdés.

Eligibility

Students currently in grade 5-11 are eligible.  The class the student is eligible for depends on test results.  Check our calendar for test locations and dates.  We also recommend that you attend an informational meeting to understand exactly what is expected of families and students in the program.  These are also listed in our calendar.  We can answer any questions you may have at these sessions.  We try to have 2nd language speakers available.

The Valdés Foundation has the means to support between 6-8 Basic Math classes this year. However, the state of the economy (i.e. gas prices) could have an impact.  It is for this reason that we seek contributions from the community and local business and foundations.  We are not supported by any school district at this time.

Testimonials

I have been a Science teacher for the past 13 years, and I have been a part of the José Valdés Summer Math Institute program since 2002. I have had the on-going opportunity to serve as a Math 2 teacher, a Math 3 teacher, and a site principal. In my opinion, the unique collaboration of motivated students, dedicated teachers and supportive parents is the cornerstone of the program’s effectiveness in bolstering student math achievement and in closing the achievement gap. During the summer of 2002, I witnessed first hand the incredible success of this intensive summer math program. After a total of six weeks, five days per week, and seven hours of math instruction per day, my students were able to triple their averaged test scores. I think that, if I had not witnessed it with my own eyes, I never would have believed it. Needless to say, I have been involved with the Valdés Summer Math Institute program ever since. ---Bob Turner, B.S., M.A.
